Gone are the days of stark white walls and minimalist interiors. As we approach the end of 2022, a vibrant shift is taking place in our homes. Maximalism, with its bold colours, eclectic patterns and unapologetic self-expression, is making a triumphant return to the forefront of interior design.
The Essence of Maximalism
Essentially, maximalism is about embracing abundance and celebrating personal style. It’s a design philosophy that encourages us to surround ourselves with objects, colours and patterns that bring us joy and tell our unique stories.
Key Features of Maximalist Design:
- Rich, Bold Colours: Think deep jewel tones, vibrant primaries and unexpected colour combinations.
- Pattern Mixing: Florals, geometrics and abstract designs coexist in harmonious chaos.
- Texture Galore: From plush velvets to rough-hewn woods, maximalism celebrates tactile diversity.
- Eclectic Furnishings: A mix of styles, eras and origins creates a curated, personal look.
- Statement Pieces: Oversized art, dramatic lighting and eye-catching accessories take centre stage.
Why Maximalism, Why Now?
After years of minimalist dominance, many of us are craving spaces that feel more personal and expressive. Maximalism offers a refreshing alternative to the often sterile and impersonal feel of minimalist interiors.
Moreover, as we’ve spent more time at home over the past couple of years, we’ve developed a deeper appreciation for our living spaces. Maximalism allows us to create environments that are not just visually stimulating but emotionally resonant as well.
Bringing Maximalism into Your Home
Ready to embrace the maximalist aesthetic? Here are some tips to get you started:
- Start with a Focal Point: Choose one element—perhaps a vibrant wallpaper or a bold piece of art—and build your room around it.
- Layer Thoughtfully: While maximalism encourages abundance, there’s still an art to layering. Ensure each element complements the others.
- Mix Patterns with Confidence: Don’t be afraid to combine different patterns. The key is to vary the scale—pair large-scale prints with smaller, more intricate designs.
- Embrace Colour: Maximalism thrives on bold, saturated hues. If you’re colour-shy, start with a neutral base and gradually introduce brighter shades.
- Display Your Collections: Use your space to showcase items that are meaningful to you. These personal touches give maximalist interiors their unique character.
- Play with Scale: Mix large statement pieces with smaller, intricate items for visual interest.

Maximalism Room by Room
Living Room
The living room is often the heart of maximalist design. Here, you can really let your creativity shine:
- Consider a bold wallpaper as a backdrop for a gallery wall of eclectic art pieces.
- Layer rugs for added texture and warmth.
- Mix different seating styles—perhaps a classic Chesterfield sofa with mid-century modern armchairs.
Bedroom
In the bedroom, maximalism can create a cosy, enveloping atmosphere:
- Start with a statement headboard—perhaps in a rich, jewel-toned velvet.
- Mix and match bedding patterns.
- Add a plush area rug and bold window treatments.
Kitchen
Even in functional spaces like the kitchen, maximalism can make a statement:
- Consider patterned tiles for a backsplash or floor.
- Opt for boldly coloured cabinetry.
- Use open shelving to display colourful dishware and unique kitchen accessories.
Bathroom
The bathroom offers a perfect canvas for maximalist experimentation:
- Try bold wallpaper or patterned tiles.
- Install statement lighting.
- Use colourful towels and accessories to add pops of colour.
The Beauty of Maximalism
The true beauty of maximalism lies in its flexibility. It’s not about adhering to strict rules or following a prescribed formula. Instead, it encourages us to trust our instincts, embrace our passions and create spaces that truly reflect who we are.
Whether you’re drawn to the eclectic charm of vintage-inspired pieces or the sleek sophistication of modern design, there’s a way to incorporate maximalist elements into your home. The key is to approach the style with a sense of playfulness and experimentation, allowing your individual taste to shine through.
As we continue to seek out ways to express our individuality and create truly one-of-a-kind living spaces, maximalism offers a refreshing and exciting approach to interior design. It challenges us to be bold, to take risks and to surround ourselves with the things we love.
So as we move towards the end of the year and look ahead to 2023, why not embrace a bit of maximalism in your home? Fill your space with colours, patterns and textures that speak to you. Surround yourself with objects that tell your story. After all, in the world of maximalism, more isn’t just more—it’s an opportunity to create a space that’s uniquely, unabashedly you.

The room in your picture looks like my nan’s old house. She was a real character and this was reflected in all aspects of her life including her home. It was always interesting when visiting her as there was something new to look at each time but I’m not sure I’d want to live anywhere quite so busy with colour!
